Ecco The Dolphin: Title Screen

Ecco The Dolphin spent his days swimming around the lagoon all day, jumping into the air, and showing off for the ladies. Food was plentiful and the weather was always nice. Fresh exotic sunshine combined fresh island air and the scenic coral reef left him a happy dolphin. All he did was play around with his friends and sing songs all day. Life was good.

Of course it can’t stay that way. This is a video game after all. However, starting out you might be wondering. You are not actually presented with a clear path. I entered the game looking for some kind of antagonist, somebody to pummel with my dolphin snout. All if found were dolphins, food, and a bunch of seashells. So there I am, jumping around, trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do when all of a sudden I jump out of the water and this huge spout comes down and sucks all my buddies out of the water, along with my lunch, and all the scenery. I guess that means I’m going to have to go beat somebody up then.

Ecco The Dolphin: Title Screen

That’s pretty much the premise of the game, figure out what happened and fix it. At this point it becomes a combination puzzle and action thing. Yeah, you can take out enemies by charging them, but that doesn’t seem to be the big point of the game. For what I played, I spent more time trying to find keys and work my way through mazes, trying not to run out of air, then I did taking out enemies. Which is good, because I found it much easier to avoid enemies then I did trying to target and charge them.

I found Ecco The Dolphin to be a fun and challenging game. It’s one of those safe for the whole family, makes you feel good inside games. The game control is easy to figure out and moving around the environment, while still having some challenge, did not get you to the point where you felt frustrated. However, running out of air at awkward times can really get under your skin. The graphics in this game are pretty slick. Rich overlays over a moving background give the game a nice 3-dimensional feel. All and all I really enjoyed playing this game. It’s not the perfect game, but given it’s good points I’m going to give it a 7 our of 10.
