Ah, the Alpha series. The very name summons thoughts of creamy 2D goodness, super combos, and amazing backgrounds. Alpha Gold for Saturn was nothing short of a masterpiece and there is a sequel…..but the question is...does it measure up? OH GOOD GOD, YES!!!
From the huge amount of characters available (with Guile and Evil Ryu available from the very beginning!) to the amazing world tour mode (picture Soul Calibur's mission battle mode, but in 2D and a little less complex), the choice of three different playing styles ( X for those who prefer the old school Street Fighter II style, A for those who liked the traditional Alpha style, and V for those who like the custom combos of Alpha 2), 3 player dramatic battle, a story mode that finally tells a story, and so much more, this is really the ultimate in Street Fighter games.

What is there not to like? Well, an online versus mode would have been very nice and maybe a 4 player dramatic battle; plus, the backgrounds, while nice, aren't as nice as the Alpha 2 backgrounds, nor is the music (although Karin's theme is just awesome), but that's really just grasping for straws. Oh, I do have to mention that the announcer is annoying as hell, but you do get used to him after a while, so...

Really, if you like Street Fighter in any way, shape, or form, you must buy this. It's got the entire casts of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha Gold, and even a host of new characters (Juli rocks!). I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a great 2D fighter for the Dreamcast.

I give Street Fighter Alpha 3 a 9 out of 10
