UPDATE: Some of our coverage earlier in the day was abbrieviated, here's the full coverage.
We're here at the Sony Press Conference. Unfortunately, my earlier fears about cell phone coverage have come true - I can't get a signal.
I'll cover this the best way I can, however. We'll post this story immediately following the show.
Jack Tretton takes the stage, and jokes about press leaks - "Wow, I'm glad you all came!" "We're a leader in the industry, and that includes press leaks." Hundreds of games available or coming for the systems. They're expecting 2009 to be their best year. 2008, PlayStation accounted for 30% or so of total sales in the industry.
We get a list of the titles that are available on the PlayStation, and then we go into the PS2 sales. PS2 outsold current generation sales in April, and they're committed to the system as long as consumers are interested. 2000 titles thus far. 100 new titles this year. And according to Jack, PS2 owners become PS3 owners.
13 million PS3s have sold. Rolling out to South America, and it's going well.
PlayStation Network has 24 million registered accounts.
Infamous has been rated at 90% or more at most major press outlets and is exclusive to PlayStation. Uncharted 2 Among Theives is up next.
Naughty Dog takes the stage to announce the Uncharted Multiplayer Beta (starting tonight). Now, we're seeing the game's single player.
The graphics are amazing, showing a city scape from the top of a tower, and it looks amazing. There's at least one guy cheering madly.
And then Rambo happens - some big helicopter starts shooting them up, and they have to RUN, a platform falls, and Drake has to make his way into a building.
He knocks over a desk and starts shooting - great interactions in the environments. Explosions everywhere, and the choppa takes out half of the building. Wow, the entire building is falling down - RUN!
So, the physics and environmental interactions are the new elements of Uncharted. Yes, many bits of it were scripted events, but it looked GREAT.
MAG is up next, and Andy Bodwin from Zipper Interactive takes the stage to show us MAG in action. 256 players at once, and we're about to watch the game LIVE, so that's going to be awesome.
So enemies aren't shown on the map by default, but the squad leader is able to call in a UAV. The enemy has an anti-aircraft battery and they took out an air assault.
They're now assaulting, and there are many people on screen. It looks good, but nowhere near as good as Uncharted or Killzone. That said, there is a ton going on on the screen.
They're going to defend a forward spawn, people will respawn inside a helicopter, and as you come in you can use chain guns on the choppers to really come in and kick some ass. Game will be running live on the show floor with 256 players. MAG will be out in the Fall.
PSP gets some love now, and they're talking up the titles that have already come out for PlayStation Portable.
Expanding the PSP to a younger audience, with a purple Hanna Montana bundle.
Kaz Hirai takes the stage to talk about the PSP. I think we'll see the PSP Go in just a few minutes. Annnndddd... he does. No physical drive is once again talked about. "Worst Kept Secret of E3"
The PSP Go won't replace the PSP 3000 or the UMD, but is smaller. 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the first PSP.
16 GB internal memory
Built in Wi-Fi
Integrated Bluetooth
"More Features"
Media Go is a PC application to allow you to access the PS Store from PC, and acts as a media converter for the PSP Go.
Sense Me analyzes your music and selects tracks to make custom playlists.
Developers get a break on the toolkits for developers. They're lowering the price of the SDKs by 80%.
All games will be offered both online and in stores - so you don't have to but a disc, but you can. PSP Go is $250, and will be available October 1 in America + Europe, November 1 for Japan.
Video delivery service for the PSP - the application is now integrated into the OS of the PSP. More content partners announced for the video service.
PSP Gran Turismo is announced. It runs at 60 fps (and it's mentioned that it's running on the PSP Go). Many tracks, standard races, and Time Trial mode.
PSP ad hoc mode. Garage mode, and more (800 cars!), it's a full Gran Tourismo experience. Many devices available on the show floor to play the game. October 1 is the launch date for the game.
Metal Gear Solid for the PSP is now being shown, Hideo Kojima takes the stage. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker just got announced. It occurs in the 1970s, as a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 3, it's a true sequel according to Hideo. We're seeing a trailer now.
Resident Evil on the PSP was just announced, but not shown. We're now being shown a montage trailer with many PSP titles in it, we'll detail this trailer later today.
24 million registered PSN accounts in 55 countries, 475 million pieces of content downloaded. 90 exclusive titles.
PSP Grant Tourismo is being shown right now. It runs at 60 fps, has a peer to peer sharing feature, and is basically a full version of the game, in portable form. Hundreds of cars and many tracks available as well.
Resident Evil for the PSP was just announced. Montage trailer for upcoming PSP games is playing now.
50 PS1 titles will be made available, and Final Fantasy 7 will be available right away. Other PSN facts include 24 million users. Home is being expanded with more Home spaces centered on specific titles. Home trailer shows us a few new items like games.
PS3 trailer with a lot of games being shown, but I don't know how many are exclusive. Ghostbusters was shown though - and a ton of others, including a tinty peek at God of War III..
Rockstar just announced Agent exclusive to the PlayStation.
Assassin's Creed 2 is being shown, and looks very good. There was one scene where he killed 2 guys simultaneously. It looked like a really cool move to pull off.
Final Fantasy 13 is just here in trailer form, rather than played, but it does seem to give us a bit more of a clue about the story. I cannot say I UNDERSTAND the story they're presenting, but it sounds like there is something to destroy. We're going to post that video asap.
Final Fantasy 14 IS COMING! EXCLUSIVE TO PS3! IN A YEAR! It's called Final Fantasy 14 Online.
PlayStation is getting a Motion Controller as well. They're on stage with an engineering prototype. It's a wand with a colored ball on the end of it, which the EyeToy can see. This allows for 1 to 1 Motion Control. The demo guy cannot hit the ball on the demo at all. Several different demos are shown, most are just tech toys at this point, but they do show a light saber whip. Then he builds stuff with a hammer in the TV. The demos seem more precise than Microsoft's demos. Especially the painting demo. The RTS demo is just great, they manipulate items on screen, then it switches to FPS mode. The more they show, the more I am impressed. Ninja stars now. Now archery. Spring of 2010 I think they just said.
Mod Nation Racers announced, it lets you create characters and racers and such. They're going over character creation now. They're now in A race, and it looks like a cart racer but with big heads, and lots of physics. Track studio makes new race courses. The joysticks help you make tracks by changing elevation and more - you can add dirt roads, it looks super simple to use, and he's just droping in mountains. It's taking next to no time at all.
The Last Guardian announced as a PS3 EXCLUSIVE, and it looks amazing. It's... about a boy and his griffin? The trailer is stunning, and substantial.
In case you were wondering, Grant Tourismo 5 looks incredible, and looks like it features some vehicle damage.
Yes, time for some God of War III game play! Looks like this demo may be playable on the floor. Here's hoping. Helios - a gigantic monster made of lava appears in the background. Kratos has wings? A ton going on right now, a minetaur needs his ass kicked. The game looks great - and brutal. Fighting a chimera. I guess Helios was fighting against the lava monster. March 2010. And that's the show.
