New game features are of course on the top of most hardcore gamers wishlist when it comes to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The most obvious is the ability to have up to four people join a game together. This is a marvelous addition to an already impressive game, and we can only image what fun it would have been to have this co-op feature in Super Mario 3. But better late than never is our stand, so grab your friends and start stomping mushrooms. Just make sure that they are competent gamers because as we’ve already mentioned, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is NOT a easy game. That difficult is magnified when multiple players enter the game because your movements can interact with each. Players can bounce off of each others heads to grab hard-to-reach items, but you may also find yourself accidentally blocking someone’s jump only to send them crashing into the abyss. There’s a lot more to discuss regarding New Super Mario Bros. Wii multiplayer, so we’ll have a detailed co-op review soon.
Players will be happy to see Yoshis making their glorious return to Mario’s action-packed New Super Mario Bros. Wii adventure. You’ll be able to bum a ride with him, eat your fill of enemies and fruit, as well as ground-pound blocks and other baddies. One very happy addition we discovered was the ability for Yoshi to even eat Hammer Brother hammers and spit them back. This really made us smile, particularly because of the lack of an official Hammer Brothers suit like in Super Mario 3.
While on the topic, there are three new suits and items that friends can share in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The first is the Ice Flower, which has debuted in other Mario titles. This item shoots ice balls that bounce similarly to the classic Fire Flower, but with a higher arc. This makes hitting enemies a little trickier, but when you do, the baddy will be temporarily frozen. This is especially useful in water-based maps where the enemies will begin floating to the surface and out of your way.
Another new item is the Propeller suit. We have to admit being disappointed here, because we would have loved to see the return of Racoon or Tanooki Mario, or even the Feather Cape from Super Mario World. But, nevertheless, players will immediately appreciate the benefits of having a propeller helmet and flight suit, especially in bottom-less levels. While wearing the Propeller Suit, giving the Wii remote a quick shake will send your character shooting up into the air. Once you reach the height of your jump you will slowly flutter back down, allowing you ample time to dodge enemies, nab extra coins, or simply plan your safe landing spot.
Nintendo’s attention to classic game design really made us fall quickly in love with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. At the same time, they wanted to include a healthy amount of new content that proves exactly why they can make video games better than almost any other organization. We are incredibly grateful that they wanted to reignite the passion of video game design and development within their most dedicated of fans. Because of this and other points mentioned above, we give the New Super Mario Bros. Wii a very high 9 out of 10 rating.
