Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been updated today, giving users Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm, Zune, and news / video channels.  The Xbox update includes High Definition movies from the Zune marketplace as well as Zune store integration.  The movies available will be in 1080p resolution. Each of these movies can be watched in parties of up to seven people.

The Facebook application on Xbox Live will allow users to cross reference their friends lists from each of the services, and the Xbox 360 version of Facebook will allow users to post updates about what movies and games they're watching / playing.

The Twitter part of the update will allow people to update their Twitter status from the Xbox 360 console.  The Last.fm application for Xbox 360 will allow people to listen to the site, and also select custom playlists based around video game selections.

Mark Whitten, Xbox Live GM, released the following statement about the update:

"We’re delivering some truly exciting social entertainment experiences to our members.  Xbox LIVE’s differentiator has always been our community, and we’ve already seen a tremendous response to these features in our public preview.  It’s the community that drives us forward and allows us to pioneer new ways of connecting people through the entertainment they love.  From the launch of Xbox LIVE nearly seven years ago, to milestones like Video Marketplace, Netflix and the New Xbox Experience, we’ve continued working toward our vision of connected entertainment for everyone.  I’m proud to say that next week marks another great stride in fulfilling that promise, and we’re already imagining what the future has in store."

Xbox owners around the country will also get access to a News and More channel, which will feature streaming media from sources such as MSNBC.

The update will be free to all Xbox 360 owners, but only Xbox Live Gold Members will be able to use all of the new services in the update.  Xbox Live currently has approximately 20 million users.

Users had expected that the update on the 28th of October was the "big" update.  That update was simple wireless access update, which allows you to use WPA2 on your current wireless adapter, and presumably the wireless N adapter that's out soon.
