Call of Duty Franchise Over $3 Billion With Modern Warfare 2

Its fairly common knowledge that Activision Blizzard's Modern Warfare 2 was released with record-breaking results, but now the company responsible for this success has claimed that the entire Call of Duty franchise has surpassed $3 billion dollars in total sales.

Since the original Call of Duty was released in 2003, Activision Blizzard has sold roughly 55 million copies from this six game series. These totals were possible through the overwhelming success of the most recent title in the series, Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 was released earlier this month on November 10th and generated nearly $310 million in sales within 24 hours with roughly 4.7 million copies sold. Within its first five days, Modern Warfare 2 earned nearly $550 million in sales across the United States and the United Kingdom.

In a statement earlier this month, Activision CEO Mike Griffith accredited  the success of the Call of Duty series to its goal of creating an unparalleled entertainment platform:

“The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium.  The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers. Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment.”
