The StarCraft II multiplayer Beta has been opened. This is a private beta, so only invited players are getting their chance to play the game. StarCraft II tells the story of the Protoss, and is one of three StarCraft games that will see release in the next few years. StarCraft II is scheduled for release before July.

Players that were invited to the closed beta include those that attended BlizzCon, but Blizzard has announced that the beta will be larger than the group of players given their invites today. If you haven't received your StarCraft II beta invitation yet, you may be included in the next wave of invites. You can try to register for the beta at http://us.battle.net.

Mike Morhaim, CEO of Blizzard had the following to say about the beta: "Gathering concentrated feedback from our players is an important step for us as we head into the final stretch of development for StarCraft II and the new Battle.net service, we look forward to having our players' help in polishing the overall experience and preparing for launch."

The beta invites are also the first real glimpse into the revamped Battle.net. Battle.net will soon allow players of StarCraft 2 to talk with players of World of Warcraft (and visa-versa), purchase in-game content, earn achievements, and it will serve as a matchmatchmaking service for StarCraft II. The first batch of players to hit the new Battle.net report an appealing, if a bit slow experience (it's the first day of the beta, after all).

PCs running the StarCraft 2 Beta need to meet the following requirements: Windows XP SP3, Vista SP1, or Windows 7 OS, 2.2 Ghz processor (Pentium IV), GeForce 6600 (or ATI 9800PRO), 1024x768 resolution, 4GB hard drive space, broadband Internet.
LAN play isn't supported with StarCraft II.
