PlayStation 3
The actual price of Hulu Plus looks to be about $13 a month, if you own a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360. Both consoles require the premium version of their Networking services. In the case of PlayStation Plus, you're adding $50 annually, and in the case of Xbox Live Gold, you're adding between $30 to $50, depending on the deal you can get (shop around!).
Part of the Hulu Plus web site code states "The instructions below will help you install Hulu Plus on your PS3. Note: you must be a subscriber of the Playstation Plus Network." This has been confirmed as visible / true for those people that have already been accepted into the preview program for Hulu Plus. Although Sony hasn't announced the requirement, it follows logically that they're looking to boost membership in the PlayStation Plus program. Microsoft announced that Xbox Live Gold would be required for the service, when the service was unveiled.
The discovery / terms come as a suprise to PlayStation owners, who are not asked to subscribe to PlayStation Plus for Netflix access. The Microsoft Xbox Live side seems more in line with previous policies. Neither company will offer the ability to skip advertisements - that's controlled by Hulu.
Hulu is coming to the PlayStation 3, if you're willing to pay $10 a month, plus the cost of PlayStation Plus. Today, Hulu announced yesterday that they'd be rolling out a new subscription-based service called Hulu Plus. Hulu Plus will allow you to stream Hulu content to many new devices, like the iPhone, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Sony Bravia TVs, Samsung Internet TVs, the iPad, Blu-ray players, and more. The service will also allow viewers to select from an entire season of programming content, rather than the last 3 episodes. Unfortunately, advertisements are also included in this model - you can't pay to get rid of the ads.
Today is the first day that iPad and iPhone users get access to Hulu Plus. On consoles, the PlayStation 3 gets the service first, starting in July. In 2011, the Xbox 360 will join the Hulu family.
Hulu CEO Jason Kilar said the following in an official statement: "Hulu Plus is not a replacement for Hulu.com. Hulu Plus is a subscription product that is incremental and complementary to the existing Hulu service. For almost all of the current broadcast shows on our service, Hulu Plus offers the full season. Subscribers also have access to back seasons or full runs of some of TV's greatest shows."
"Hulu Plus subscribers can now watch their favorites through more than just the browser on their Mac or PC. Viewers who own select Samsung Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players can download a Hulu Plus application from the Samsung app store and start streaming directly."
Although Xbox 360 isn't getting the service until 2011, Microsoft representatives said "We're incredibly excited to bring Hulu Plus and its amazing library of entertainment to Xbox Live. Hulu Plus joins our ever-expanding entertainment offerings on Xbox 360, which currently includes Netflix, Last.fm and Zune Video."
