Today, Microsoft announced that they will be producing a new controller which features an improved D pad. While Nintendo holds the patents on the D-pad as we know it, Microsoft has produced a controller which will have both a D-pad configuration, and a "disk" configuration. When you twist the disc, the controller becomes a raised D-pad, which is hopefully a bit better for fighting games and the like.
Aside from the controller's D-pad configuration, the buttons are no longer colored, which is a first for Microsoft as well. The controller will feature concave joysticks, similar to the current Xbox controller.
The new controller should be available November 9th, for $64.99. The controller ships only with the Play and Charge Kit. At normal retail prices, a controller usually sells for $40 and the Play and Charge for $15-20, so prices on this model are comparible to older models (but this is obviously a small premium). The controller will be coming to Europe some time early next year.
Microsoft states that their new controller design is patented.
