Microsoft FINALLY Admits Wireless Headset problems - Kind of...

Xbox 360

Via Major Nelson's blog (Community Director of Xbox Live) as well as the "GamerScore Blog", here's the latest word about the wireless headset for the Xbox 360:

We have received feedback from some customers that they have experienced issues while using the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset, including difficulty syncing the headset to the controller, reception interference and audio sensitivity when playing action-packed games like Gears of War. We are committed to providing the highest quality accessories for Xbox 360 and would like to assist in troubleshooting and resolving those issues, whether by replacing or repairing the units under warranty. We encourage anyone experiencing issues with the Wireless Headset to call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX.

Since the release of the headset, several users have lit up forums, including the official Xbox.com forums, complaining about disconnects, the mic being too sensitive, low range, and other issues with the MS produced headset (most issues noted in the brief statement above). Several users begged for a recall, and apparently, their wish has been "sort of" granted.

Interestingly enough, when it was announced that users should call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX, several users immediately complained about the support line...

PLEASE find some other avenue than the horrid 800-4-myxbox ...

Have you seen this case of an Xbox CSR YELLING at a customer?

http://www.consumerist.com/consumer/complaints/xbox-screams-that-month-old-units-90day-warranty-is-expired-220997.php

Stinks...

My experience with 1-800-4MY-XBOX has been nothing short of terrible.

The people at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX are brainless idiots. They know nothing about anything.

My buddy wasted $60 on that piece of garbage headset. He called them up to ask about the problem. They just kept on insisting that it was his router settings (WTF??) that was causing the issue and it wasn't their problem.

Bunch of frickin idiots.

Don't call that number for "help" unless you want to become 150% more agitated than you already are.

I spent over five hours on the phone with three different support agents getting the run around before they agreed to let me send my wireless headset in for repair.

I get to pay for shipping.
I emailed Major about it and he was very helpful, but the people working the phones at 1-800-4MY-XBOX are scheisters and there's no way around that. Here's a fun list of excuses they gave me while on the phone:
"Your 360 is out of warranty so we won't repair it."
"We don't repair accessories."
"Your wireless headset is out of warranty."
"There are no managers at the call center for you to talk to."
"We're not allowed to send people shipping boxes."

Have any of you had similar issues with Xbox tech support? My experiences have been largely positive.

Unfortunately it's not until now that I’ve started finding tons of threads from disgruntled Xbox 360 wireless headset purchasers. Yes they are faulty, and are a complete waste of time. Some users said their units worked perfectly, that’s really good news, for them; most likely the got lucky and received a decent one; for most, this is only a distant dream. Have you got a problem with your headset not connecting to quad 1?? Keep the posts coming. I'd like to see just how many more ppl there are like myself and larsoncc. If you Google 'wireless crap+xbox 360 headset' you'll be sure to find lots of interesting threads.

Same here for the UK
I bought mine pre-xmas from Amazon.co.uk I can't connect, then it won't synchronise, people can't hear me when I do finally get it to work. Then, if I turn my surround sound on it shuts down completely and won't synch at all yet my wireless handset is fine! I've since given up as the call centres in the UK are full of immigrants employed for cheap labour by MS and know nothing about MS products or how to resolve the situation. They just read off a script - "No it isn't my Xbox thats at fault" I hear myself saying over and over again. You spend 5 hours talking to these foreign idiots, when an English person would understand your issues and the call would be over in half the time. Frustrated, annoyed and extremely angry at MS for releasing such a poor product and employing idiots. Now it's just sat on the side doing nothing and won't be used again - great way to spend £35.99 Well done MS

Maybe fixable with update hopefully.....
I have found certain games tend to make the headset work worse then other games. I have found playing with wwe smackdown vs raw 07 hitting the mute button tends to make the mic's speakers beep. I have also recieved echo's in tony hawk project 8 when i speak. Im hoping that Microsoft will fix these problems with an update to the system thats probably why there backing away from putting out a recall, from my experiences with it it might be fixable with a update but i still wish $60's would be adding up to a quality product that works right. I blame Microsoft not testing it enough. This headset should be tested with all online games before being sold to us.

Problem with mic not connecting to the same quadrant as controller
I work for a videogame company that makes controllers and recently found out what causes the wireless headset not to connect with some controllers. The inside of the mic input on all 360 controllers can get warped from using a wired headset. When it warps, it causes the metal to create a bridge when the mic is removed. The controller thinks the mic is still plugged in when it's removed, because of this bridge. A wired mic will take priority over a wireless mic. When you go to connect your wireless mic to a controller that is bridged, it will just move over to the next available quadrant. As for the noise, I am not sure what is causing it. Might be bad components? The input jack is being redesigned and will be used for all new controllers. I just found out about this and do not know if there is a fix for it. If I find anything out, I will let you guys know.

My only guess is that there is some truth to this 'bridge' wearing out that some other commenters have mentioned but I doubt anything like a 'toothpick' can fix this. I took from the bridge collapse that newer controllers should have a bridge in tact and, of course, my second handset has rarely been used unless friends are round and even then, they never wear a headset. Wireless Headset Quadrant 1 issue.
Hello. I will try and explain the reason why the wireless headset won't connect to your controller the best i can. The reason is this: Older devices that you attach to the bottom of your controller, such as an older wired microphone or the xbox controller keyboard, will in time PERMENANTLY overwrite the bottom bit where you plug your stuff in. Meaning that it fools your wireless headset to make it believe as if there are already a microphone of some kind in that place. Therefore it will then connect to Quadrant 2 instead because the goddamn glitch has made the controller completely unavailable for connection with ALL the wireless headsets, so you can't go to the store and explain your version why it won't connect and get a new one then come back home and think it's gonna work. I know it sucks and i am pissed about it as well because my controller just stopped working with my wireless headset because i had an older version of the xbox controller keyboard inserted to the bottom of my controller. And this issue is not mendable so you have to buy a new controller (which sucks for me because i bought a Special Silver Edition one) if you want a controller that works with the wireless headset. I am PISSED at Microsoft for being so lazy and not testing their products properly and for being unsupportive to their customers for not giving you a new controller back when you show them a bloody warranty. Microsoft, you have failed.

I called them and they said that I owed them money. They said that my gold membership had expired. So, instead of turning me over to the free acc. they continue to charge me and expect me to pay. The kicker is I have a receipt from MS stating that my gold has been renewed until May 2012. I got my account back but not gold; they refuse to even listen to me about a receipt. Then there is the whole ordeal with the Zune. I keep buying songs and they keep taking them away from me. All total Microsoft has screwed me out of about $400. But what you gonna do? XBox messenger pad
if you have an xbox messenger kit on, it won't work. take the kit off and the mic will sync with the controller.

fixed for me
was having issue of headset not connecting to certain controllers, it would skip over those spots on sync. the guys talking about Toothpicks and the wired headset jack being bridged were correct, I used a can of electronics cleaner, took out the battery, then blew out the connector with the cleaner, let it dry and voila! it now connects to the older controllers that wouldn't sync.
