Modern Warfare 3's "Call of Duty: Elite" Service Still Hosed, Members Get Free Month (11/17/2011)

The Call of Duty Elite service is meant to provide gamers stat tracking, access to downloadable content, special perks for 'Founders' of the service, and ways for gamers to connect together to play Modern Warfare 3.
The problem is, Activision's Call of Duty Elite service has not been online since the game's launch. The official Twitter feed for Call of Duty has this to say: 'Weandrsquo;re having ELITE reg/login issues. Teams are working to increase capacity. Thanks for your patience. For info follow @CallofDutyELITE'
The issues are clearly related to capacity problems. The crushing rush of gamers eager to get started using Call of Duty Elite has meant that servers have been at maximum capacity since midnight. On the official Elite Status page (callofduty.com/elite/status), Beachhead Studios has posted the following:
'Registration requests for our new live service Call of Duty Elite are exceeding even our most optimistic expectations, which is creating a bottleneck and some players have not been able to register.

We have already registered hundreds of thousands of players and we are working around the clock to increase our capacity as quickly as possible.'
The status update goes on to reassure users that the login issues they're currently experiencing won't affect stat tracking or other features of the service:

In an era where a game costs anywhere from $5-50 million to make, this is still a stunning success. It's not even the Holiday season yet.
Activision Blizzard released a statement today calling Modern Warfare 3's launch the biggest in entertainment history. See below for the full statement.

October Game Sales Disappoint According to NPD (11/12/2011)

Video game sales topped $621 million for the month of October, representing a 1-3% increase in sales over this time last year. Unfortunately, analysts had expected the video game market to increase by about 14%. This past month's sales are wildly lower than even conservative estimates, showing a disappointing month for the industry at large.
The slow growth for this past month seems to show that the game industry may be flat for the year, or even down a bit over last year's numbers, despite a stonger month in October.
Growth over last year was led by Battlefield 3, which sold over 5 million units in the first week of its release in October. Most in the industry expected that the strong titles available this past month should have driven stronger growth than was seen at retail.
The NPD announced that Batman: Arkham City was another strong seller this past month, with over 1.5 million units sold.
Here are the top 10 games for October:
1. Battlefield 3 (Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, PC)
2. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3)
3. NBA 2K12 (Xbox 360,Sony PlayStation 3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, PS2, PC)

5. Just Dance 3 (Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360)
6. Dark Souls (Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
7. Madden NFL 12 (Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, PS2, PSP)

Significant Halo: Reach Update in September (08/26/2011)

Once in a great while, the video game industry is blessed with something so pure and good that gamers everywhere must weep in joy. In 1991, we learned that hedgehogs can defy gravity. In 1993, a space marine with only three facial expressions journeyed into the bowels of hell. Then we all got lazy and stopped keeping track of stuff. Flash forward to today: we receive word that Bungie's flagship FPS series on the Xbox 360, Halo: Reach, is undergoing a significant multiplayer update that finally brings 'Armor Locking' to its knees (pun woefully intended).
Rather than players protecting themselves in an energy shield that prevents all damage, injures nearby enemies, deflects sticky grenades, enables super-human meleeing attacks, and makes breakfast for your entire team, soldiers in Halo: Reach will have to don SKILL in order to defeat their opponents. The update from Bungie, which is expected sometime in September, is said to contain several gameplay balances, the largest being an adjustment to the aforementioned Armor Lock ability. After the update, a certain amount of damage will have a chance to pierce an Armor Locking enemy. The ability will also no longer detatch sticky grenades. This will hopefully discourage the rampant abuse of Armor Lock that tends to disrupt the enjoyable gameplay Halo: Reach has to offer.
These changes are already causing quite a flare-up between pro and anti Armor Lockers. But fear not, we've predicted the next Bungi. . .

Nintendo Wii U Uses Radeon Graphics, Multicore CPU (06/15/2011)

Several hardware specs have leaked about the Nintendo Wii U. IBM stated in a press release that the Wii U will be powered by the same type of processor found in the Watson machine, which earlier this year won a round of Jeopardy. Other sources have now revealed the graphics chip powering the Wii U - a Radeon 4000 series GPU.
In additionn, Nintendo sent out a statement immediately following their E3 2011 pres conference, confirming several details about the Nintendo Wii U. First and foremost, the Wii U is a full-HD system, capable of graphics in resolutions up to 1080p.
The Nintendo Wii U system unit is approximately 1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide and 10.5 inches long. The new controller has a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen in the center of the controller. The controller does have taditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads.
This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.
About gaming with the controller, the statement reads:

Nintendo Wii U Can't Play DVDs or Blu-Ray (06/15/2011)

Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, has stated that the Wii U will not play DVDs or Blu Ray movies. This news comes on the heels of another dissappointing bit of news, that the Wii U may have a one touchscreen limit.
Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the Zelda series, said that multiple Wii U controllers likely will not be used with the Wii U system in an earlier interview. When asked about the possibility of two players controlling the system, each with a touchpad controller, Mr Miyamoto said:
'Our basic premise is that you can use one with a system. If we got to an idea of having multiple (controllers) it might be just more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that.'
Later, the statement was qualified as 'we're researching that possibility.'
Virtually no details were given about the Wii U's online functionality, either. While the Nintendo press conference at E3 2011 did state that there would be 'rich' online functionality, absolutely no specific details were given. Electronic Arts seemed to imply more about Nintendo's online functionality than Nintendo themselves.
Nintendo formally announced their new console, the Nintendo Wii U last week . Like the Wii, the Nintendo Wii U has a unique controller, and will use this controller as a differentiator in the hotly competitive console market. The center of th. . .

PSVita At $250, Uncharted 3 - Will This Make Us Forget PSN Troubles? (06/14/2011)

This year, Sony is poised to come back swinging in the portable market, and continue marketing their high-end PS3 to gamers that love richly detailed games. Sony's Jack Tretton started Sony's PlayStation Media Briefing last week by apologizing for the PlayStation Network outage, which has been a huge source of embarassment for the company. While a very small joke was made about the outage ('nothing pleases editors more than controversy'), most of the comments were apologetic to retail partners, developers, and to the fans of PSN. Almost no time was wasted leading the crowd quickly to their efforts in bringing service back online, and from there, the game and PSVita announcements hit like hammers for 90 minutes.
Jack Tretton used this year's E3 to appeal to Sony's audience of 'hard core' gamers. Each game that was shown beat the drum of fan service, and the march of the conference was deliberate and meant to drive the point home: Sony wants the core gamer. A big part of the E3 conference this year was detailing Sony's new system, the PS Vita.
The PSVita is the next generation portable system from Sony. PlayStation Vita, or PSVita will be available exclusively on the ATandamp;T mobile broadband network for 3G play. There will be a WiFi model available, but if you want to play the PSVita on the go with 3G support, you need to use the machine on the ATandamp;T n. . .

Nintendo Wii U Unconvincing to the Money Men? (06/14/2011)

Wedbush's Micheal Pachter has weighed in on the announcement of the Wii U, and his analysis is that the Wii U will be impactful, but it comes two years too late to make a significant impact on the market, given the relative power of competing systems like the Xbox 360 and the Sony PS3.
After mulling over the Nintendo Wii U annoucement, investors started selling Nintendo stock, enough to drive the price of the stock down 5% in a single day, and causing another 4+% the following day. This is despite strong statements of support from third party developers, and a positive reception of the Wii U on the show floor by several media outlets.
Nintendo's president expressed surprise about the nearly 10% drop in stock price. Mr Iwata said 'The reaction to the presentation and what I heard from people I met and the mood of the convention did not chime at all with what happened in the stock market. It's very strange.'
Nintendo formally announced their new console, the Nintendo Wii U at this year's E3. Like the Wii, the Nintendo Wii U has a unique controller, and will use this controller as a differentiator in the hotly competitive console market. The center of the large, pad-like controller features a 6.2 inch touchscreen. This screen allows a gamer to switch from playing their games on their HDTV to playing directly on the new controller, seemlessly. The Wii U isn't restricted to using this new controlle. . .

The newest Tomb Raider game was shown this week for the first time at the Microsoft E3 2011 press conference. In the game Lara Croft gets impaled - and you can see her injury impacting her ability to move and jump as the game progresses. Crystal Dynamics has announced that the worlds that Lara explores will be more open, and more focused on survival. The new Tomb Raider game is a complete reboot of the franchise, starring a young Lara Croft that hasn't been on an adventure before.
There's a 'survival vision' mode in the game which highlights important environmental elements. It's a new play mechanic that some are likening to Batman's detective vision mode.
The official trailer for the game is below. Tomb Raider launches next year - 2012.

Nintendo Wii U: One Touchscreen Controller Per System (06/09/2011)

Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the Zelda series in an interview with news.au.com, said today that multiple Wii U controllers likely will not be used with the Wii U system.
Nintendo formally announced their new console, the Nintendo Wii U this week . The Wii U isn't restricted to using this new controller to play games, however. The system can also be controlled with the Wiimote, using the screen on the additional display to show extra elements of the game. Apparently, the controller
The Wii U is 100% backward compatible with the Nintendo Wii. However, no price was announced for the syste. . .

E3 2011: Nintendo 3DS Gets Super Mario, Mario Kart, StarFox, and More (06/09/2011)

Nintendo is showing several franchise classics that are coming to the 3DS, playable on the Electronic Entertainment Expo's show floor. Star Fox, Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion, Kid Icarus, and Mario Bros are all moving to the 3DS starting this Fall. Announced this week, the five new titles have classic game play, but feature new elements unique to the Nintendo 3DS system.
Mario Kart is the first title that Nintendo showed during their E3 2011 press conference, and allows players to hang glide, move underwater, and more. Mario Kart will be available this Holiday Season, and will be all new.
Also announced is a new Star Fox, which will allow players to control the ship either through tilting the 3DS system, or using traditional controls. The 3DS camera is also integrated into the Star Fox title. Star Fox is launching in September.
Super Mario is also coming to the Nintendo 3DS. Super Mario 3D was created entirely from scratch for the Nintendo 3DS. Yes, fans, the Tanooki Suit was on display for the game. Super Mario 3D comes out before the end of the year.
Kid Icarus looks like a very fast version of Star Fox, or at a minimum, Space Harrier. Kid Icarus also has a multiplayer 'deathmatch' style mode, 3vs3. The graphics look great for the system. One last thing shown about Kid Icarus Uprising was the card battle game, an augmented reality. . .
